“with electric back-up band”

His fourth album “Another side of Bob Dylan” has no protest songs because of his music style was changing. And his next album, called Bringing It All Back Home was greatly changed from Folk music style to Folk-Rock style. From those days, Bob played own music with electric back-up band. Bringing It All Back Home often considered first Folk-Rock album in the world. And the first song of this album, Subterranean Homesick Blues was used in what became one of the first music clips in the world. And from this album, “Mr. Tambourine Man” was covered by “The Byrds” and became his first top song of his songs on Billboard chart. So I think this album is very important album in his musical career.

After protest folk period,  Bob often taken some drugs since about 1964. And those days, he deepen exchanged with some British rock-bands (The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and so on) and he spread drugs to The Beatles. It’s experiences influenced The Beatles‘s music style.

Now his Folk-Rock style album “Bringing It All Back Home” was considered to one of the greatest album in popular music, however, in those days, this style was not audience’s expectancy. So sometimes he got hoot and booing from his audience during his performance. However he kept playing Rock music with his  electric back-up band “The Hawks” (“The Hawks” was renamed “The Band” after a few years), and he released next album, called “Highway 61 Revisited”. This album is one of his most famous album, and his style is more Rock than “Bringing It All Back Home”. And this album has many great rock songs. “Like a Rolling Stone” won the top of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” by Rolling Stone Magazine. I think it is very fantastic. And the last song, “Desolation Row” is also great. It was ranked number 185 of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” by Rolling Stone Magazine. So this album often considered one of the most important rock album in the world by people.
In 1966, Bob Dylan released his seventh album “Blonde on Blonde”. Bob also succeed with this album. And this album was also getting big hit. Especially, from this album, “Just Like Women” was ranked number 33 of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” by Rolling Stone Magazine. In those period, I think Bob Dylan was in golden age in his career, however, on 29 Jul. 1966, Dylan crashed in Woodstock, New York. And he injured and it was long rest. So his golden age, “with electric back-up band” is ended with this motorcycle accident.

During this period, Bob was released 3 albums and he got 2 platinum discs (“Bringing It All Back Home” and “Highway 61 Revisited”) and 1 double platinum (“Blonde on Blonde” ). In this period, he was changing own protest folk style to electric music style and he often got blamed by his audiences. However he built a big success with those Folk-Rock music. So I think this age is also one of the his golden ages in his musical career.

“debut, and singing protest folks”

Starting today, I will post each period on my Timerime every week. So today, I will introduce a first period “debut, and singing protest folks” on my TimeRime.
※※※※

Bob Dylan was debuted in 1962 with his first album “Bob Dylan”. Until then, Bob performed at coffee house and club in New York. This album was selling 5,000 copies in the first year, but this wasn’t sold well for his record company, Columbia Records.

However, his second album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” was getting big hit. Because America in those days was during the height of the civil rights movement. So Bob Dylan’s songs were featured as the protest songs with people. Especially, a song of this album, “Blowin’ in the Wind” was getting hit with covered version by Peter, Paul and Mary, and became one of the most popular song in the world. From this point, Bob became a star as the spokesman in young people.

In JAN. 1964, Bob was released his third album The Times They Are a-Changin’. This also got hit in the world, and Bob was released fourth album Another Side of Bob Dylan in the summer of that year. At that day, Bob got tired for expectancy as protest folk singer. So his music style was changing from protest folk style.

Between the 1962 and 1965, Bob was released 4 albums and he got 2 gold discs (The Times They Are a-Changin’ and Another Side of Bob Dylan) and 1 platinum (“The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” ). So I think this age is a one of the his golden ages in his musical career.

Now I think I am going to research some each age’s album in this discography. There are too many albums in his career, but maybe I can research some of them…

What do I want to write about?

I am going to write about Bob Dylan. So I will research about his songs and information by some books and CDs. But I also want to research about other musicians because they have some information about Bob Dylan. For example, I also want to research about Woody Guthrie. Because Bob Dylan’s music have been influenced very much by Woody Guthrie’s music. Woody Guthrie is protest folk singer in America and his songs are very old (he was born in 1912). But Bob Dylan often said that Woody Guthrie is a only hero. So I also want to research about Woody Guthrie. Of course, I will mainly research about  Bob Dylan.

Why did I choose the topic about Bob Dylan?

By the way, do you know anything about Bob Dylan? I think he is very famous, so at least I think you must know only his name, or his famous songs, like “Like a Rolling Stone”. “Like a Rolling Stone” is a good number in his discography, however, the reason why I choose this topic is that I was impressed by his other CD, called “Good as I Been to You”. This was released in 1992, so as his long music career, “Good as I Been to You” was released after he had passed his peak. But I think this is really good album in his music career. In America, there are many old traditional songs. In this album, Bob Dylan covered some of those with only acoustic instruments (only guitar, harmonica, and his voice). Of course all of songs in this album are so simple because all songs are American traditional numbers, but they are so powerful.

I like music very much. And now I am interested in some of English songs’ lyrics. So I am going to research about Bob Dylan, and others my favorite artists’ songs’ lyrics in this class. Now I am not able to understand his songs’ lyric well because I can’t understand English perfectly. But I will try to understand music perfectly.

Introduction

Yesterday I had changed my theme, so today I will  introduce about new theme on this post.

※※※

I am interested in lyric of some songs from my favorite musicians. Their names are Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson and Wilco (This is rock band, not person’s name). Their music are really cool, but I don’t know their lyrics well because they always using English. So I want to research about their songs’ lyric deeply (or some of their songs’ lyrics). Especially, now I am interested in Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie because I feel that their styles are very strange and interesting. Perhaps I will introduce each of musicians and their songs little by little.
